Teacher and Student Alert

James Quina is teaching The King of Cups in his English classes at Tulane University and Our Lady of Holy Cross College. Students are developing in-depth research projects on the background of the novel. They are spreading the word about The King of Cups, telling their friends, family and neighbors that The King of Cups is a great read and that they can't wait until it is made into a movie.

Hundreds of students have now researched New Orleans cuisine and restaurants, Mardi Gras, the birth of jazz, voodoo, architecture, history of the French Quarter; Storyville and prostitution in New Orleans; multiculturalism, gambling, theatre, swordsmanship; playwrights such as Tennessee Williams; serpent-handling worship, the influences of Spain, France and Port au Prince on New Orleans culture; cemeteries and burial practices; fashion, botanical gardens, diseases and medical practices. The King of Cups provides a microcosm of New Orleans of 1905 and, in many respects, of present-day New Orleans.

A Message of Hope for New Orleans

To those who lost so much in Hurricane Katrina:

The devastation of Hurricane Katrina brings current the monumental difficulties of founding a city out of a swamp and the tenacity and resilience of those who love New Orleans. This resilience is perpetuated in James Quina's The King of Cups.
